In a multi-server configuration, one of the servers is designated as the license server. This server must be available at all times in order to verify licenses for all users and for other servers where the product is installed. In cases where the license server is decommissioned or otherwise needs to be offline, here are instructions on how to move the license server to another server.
FinePrint 9 and pdfFactory 6 versions and later have a command to move the license server. Open the Configure dialog box in the Licensing tab, right-click on the new license server name and select “make license server”.
These instructions are for pdfFactory 6, but will work for any version of pdfFactory. For example, if you have pdfFactory 3 if you just change “6” to “3” in the steps below.
Here are two registry keys that need to be changed. This needs to be done on each server.
In HKLM\SOFTWARE\FinePrint Software\pdfFactory6 there are two registry entries:
LicenseServer (REG_SZ) specifies the current license server
ServerCache (REG_MULTI_SZ) contains a list of all servers that are running pdfFactory SE
Delete these two registry entries.
Copy the license database file (c:\windows\system32\FppLicense6.ini) from the old license server to the new license server. Once this has been done either rename or delete the license database file on the old license server, to prevent any possible inconsistencies.
On the new license server:
- open the Printers folder
- right-click on the pdfFactory printer and run Printing Preferences
- go to the Licensing tab
This server will detect the license database file and will make itself the license server. Then click on the Configure button and enter the names of all the other servers that are running pdfFactory SE.
On the other servers (not the license server):
- open the Printers folder
- right-click on the pdfFactory printer and run Printing Preferences
- go to the Licensing tab
– click Configure and configure the server settings as needed
On the client PCs, if there are any connections to shared printers on the old license server, those connections need to be deleted.
